Shopkeeper: Scaling a Multi-Tenant SaaS POS & Inventory Platform

How we engineered Shopkeeper, a high-performance multi-tenant SaaS POS and inventory management system with isolated database-per-customer architecture.

Shopkeeper: Scaling a Multi-Tenant SaaS POS & Inventory Platform

The Challenge

Enterprise retail clients demand total data isolation to prevent cross-tenant data leaks and database lock contention under heavy concurrent usage. Standard single-database multi-tenancy models (using column-based tenant IDs) fall short of strict security compliance audits. Additionally, high-volume retail environments demand sub-second checkout latencies and real-time ledger synchronization across multiple checkout nodes.

The Solution

We designed a robust database-per-tenant architecture using Stancl Tenancy, automatically provisioning isolated MySQL databases and secure subdomains for each registered merchant in under 45 seconds. The front-end was built as a highly reactive Single Page Application (SPA) using Vue.js, Inertia.js, and Tailwind CSS to guarantee a fluid native-app feel. The backend, built on Laravel, automates double-entry accounting ledger generation, stock-level alert triggers, and daily encrypted S3 cloud backups.

The Results

• 100% database-level tenant isolation achieved, fully complying with enterprise security standards.
• Average checkout transaction latency dropped to 350ms.
• Zero occurrences of cross-tenant data contamination.
• Automated onboarding setup provisions new shops in under 45 seconds.
